Call/Contact The Local Post Office or USPS
One of the first things you should do is contact USPS to update your mailing address. This ensures your mail gets forwarded to your new home and avoids the hassle of missing important documents or packages. You can do this online at the USPS Change of Address page or by visiting your local post office. You don’t want your mail showing up at your old address especially if someone else is moving in.
Save Money For The Rainy Day
Moving can get expensive. From purchasing new furniture to replacing appliances, these costs add up quickly. Whether you’re buying a home or renting, it’s wise to have a few months’ worth of expenses saved. Unexpected costs like repairs, utility deposits, or emergency purchases can sneak up, so having a financial cushion brings peace of mind.
Check your Utilities
Double-check that your utilities (electricity, water, gas, internet, etc.) are properly transferred or set up at your new address. Each provider may have different processes depending on your location. Don’t assume your services will follow you automatically. For example, some internet providers don’t serve every area, so shop around in advance and schedule installations before moving in.
Update Your Address Everywhere
- Beyond USPS, make sure to update your address with:
- Banks and credit card companies
- Subscriptions and streaming services
- DMV (driver’s license and vehicle registration)
- Your employer and tax documents
- Insurance providers (home, auto, health)
Take Photos of Everything (Especially Rentals)
If you’re moving into a rental, take detailed photos of the apartment’s condition before moving your items in. Document any damage and report it to your landlord to avoid losing your deposit later.
Have a Move-In Day Plan
- Don’t just wing it. Have a clear schedule for moving day:
- What time to pick up the truck or meet the movers
- Who’s responsible for what
- Which rooms to unpack first
- Where to get food or take breaks
