A Fresh Start Begins with Smarter Packing
January tends to bring a wave of organization projects, from clearing out closets to reorganizing spare rooms and garages. In many cases, these projects take time because items are packed hastily or without a clear system. Taking a more thoughtful approach to packing your things away can make staying organized an easy new year’s resolution that you’ll achieve in no time.
Packing best practices start with visibility and accessibility. Items you’ll need again within a few months should be packed differently to those meant for long-term storage. However, packing things you expect to be put away for a longer time doesn’t mean you should pay any less attention, these things should be stored carefully and well preserved. Placing frequently accessed belongings near the top of boxes and labeling multiple sides helps prevent unnecessary unpacking later. A simple inventory list to refer to for the future can also save time when you’re trying to find something specific, keep it on a piece of paper or even your notes app!
Another key habit is packing to protect, not just containing. You may find yourself trying to pack as many things as you can into one box. This isn’t a good habit for several reasons, you may risk breaking the box from weight, it’ll be harder to move therefore harder to retrieve things from inside, and you’ll have trouble digging through its contents taking up even more time. Using consistent box sizes, when possible, allows for safer stacking and more efficient storage. Wrapping fragile items individually and cushioning empty spaces reduces shifting and breakage over time.
Starting the year with an organized packing system sets you up for smoother transitions, whether that means rearranging your home, moving later in the year, or storing items between seasons. Packing with purpose now helps keep clutter under control and makes future projects far less stressful.
